Riichi Nomi Open 2022
Riichi Nomi NYC is delighted to invite players from around the country and world to our very first in-person open tournament, the Riichi Nomi Open 2022!
DATES
July 2-3, 2022
ENTRY
Admission fee $75.
You will be contacted via email with instructions on how to pay the fee to Riichi Nomi's PayPal. Your payment confirms your registration, and cancellation is permitted only in cases of emergencies. We have increased the player cap to 80 players, and we will be accepting additional sign-ups until registration closes on June 25, 2022.

The venue, and all of NYC, is accessible with our 24-hour subway system (“the MTA”).
The venue is within a 5-minute walk of the 4, 5, 6, and Q trains at the 86th Street stops.
COVID RESTRICTIONS
NYC no longer requires the use of a mask in indoor settings. We strongly encourage the wearing of a mask, and require that you are vaccinated to enter the venue. If you sit at a table with a player who requests you wear a mask for that hanchan, we will have disposable masks available if you do not have your own. All COVID guidance is subject to change in accordance with NYC and NYS mandates.

RULES
The tournament will utilize the following rules, known as the "Riichi Nomi Classic" ruleset:

Hanchan (South-east games) with 75 minute timers

15-5 uma and no oka
-
3 red fives
-
No abortive draws
-
No headbump (double and triple ron on)
-
Kiriage (rounded up) mangan on
-
Agariyame and tobi off (Dealer tenpai/win does not end game, no busting)
-
Kazoe and stacking yakuman on
-
Kandora flips immediately
-
Nagashi mangan on

We expect good will and fair sportsmanship from all attendees, be they players or staff. We will provide a sheet of specific conduct rules for players.
STRUCTURE
-
6 hanchan of qualifiers, leading to a cutoff for 2 semifinal hanchan, cutting to the top 4 placements for 1 final hanchan.

​The first cutoff will be determined based on the number of participants, and announced prior to the tournament.

All participants play 4 hanchan on Saturday July 2nd, 2 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon. The final 2 qualifier hanchan will be in the morning on Sunday, July 3rd.

Players ranked above the cutoff have their scores reset, then go into 2 semifinal games. The top 4 players from semifinals then go into a single final hanchan.

All players not making the cut will have an event during the semifinal and final hanchan.

Fourth of July BBQ
July 4th, 11am - 5pm

FOOD
Lunch, snacks, coffee and tea on both days of the tournament are offered complimentary with your admission!
The venue will cater salad, chicken and tuna salad sandwiches, and potato salad, as well as water, lemonade, iced tea, and coffee to drink.
If you are not interested in the venue’s lunch offerings, there are countless eating establishments of various cuisines within a 2 block radius of the venue.

PRIZES
1st Place: $300 USD, and a trophy
2nd Place: $150 USD
3rd Place: $75 USD
The player who comes in next-to-last place will win the traditional “booby prize”. There may also be additional prizes.

FOURTH OF JULY BBQ
In the event you are in town for Monday, July 4th following the tournament, you are invited to the club's Fourth of July BBQ on Governor's Island! This is an informal social event where you are encouraged to bring food to grill or drinks to share as you enjoy the Fourth of July holiday with new and old mahjong friends.
